Commuting Patterns Pre and Post Covid: Reflections from my past academic research
Few years ago, while writing my dissertation for my Masters, the pandemic hit. Coincidentally or not, I was researching the As part of my research, I interviewed different managers to understand their ๐ฎ๐๐๐ถ๐๐๐ฑ๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐ ๐ต๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ-๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ๐ถ๐ป๐ด at their organizations. The picture I got is almost unanimous โ Teleworking is not welcomed as a fixed policy; if any, it is tolerated only in particular situations or special occasions. The idea of allowing employees to work from home without a reasonable cause seemed back then peculiar, abnormal, and somehow suspicious โ why would someone ask to work from home on a regular basis?
Towards the end of my research, while writing my conclusion, the pandemic hit and made my researchโs conclusion completely irrelevant.
According to my research, the main reasons employers didnโt want to allow employees to work from home were the ๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฝ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ฑ๐๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐๐ถ๐๐, ๐น๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ธ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐ฒ๐ณ๐ณ๐ถ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ป๐ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐บ๐บ๐๐ป๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป caused by ๐๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ต๐ป๐ผ๐น๐ผ๐ด๐ถ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐น ๐ถ๐บ๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฑ๐ถ๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐, and on top of all โ ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐น๐ถ๐ฎ๐ฏ๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐๐ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ป๐. Managers feared their employees would be tempted to engage with other activities while at home (maliciously or not).
Nevertheless, the universe had its own plan, and for the last few years, many companies complied with ๐ป๐ฒ๐ ๐ฝ๐ผ๐น๐ถ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ ๐ฎ๐น๐น๐ผ๐๐ถ๐ป๐ด ๐ฒ๐บ๐ฝ๐น๐ผ๐๐ฒ๐ฒ๐ ๐๐ผ ๐๐ผ๐ฟ๐ธ ๐ณ๐ฟ๐ผ๐บ ๐ต๐ผ๐บ๐ฒ, at least occasionally. While it is true that, as of 2024, some companies went back to the old pre-Covid structure, many companies are allowing flexible arrangements where the โhybridโ arrangement became very popular. Nowadays, companies acknowledge the benefits of teleworking and are more likely to allow teleworking, regardless of the actual concern of viral transmission in workplaces.
In my view, the transition in working arrangements coerced by Covid brought It showed us all that it is indeed possible to work from home. Furthermore, it presented an opportunity to ๐ณ๐ผ๐๐๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐ฝ๐ผ๐๐ถ๐๐ถ๐๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ต๐ฎ๐ป๐ด๐ฒ ๐๐ผ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฑ๐ ๐ฎ ๐บ๐ผ๐ฟ๐ฒ ๐๐๐๐๐ฎ๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐ฏ๐น๐ฒ ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ป๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐, such as reducing car usage and converting parking spaces into parks.
How has COVID-19 reshaped commuting habits, and what impact will these emerging work arrangements have on our travel patterns? Can these changes contribute to fostering a more sustainable and environmentally conscious society?
